Do You Actually Need an Agency?
An honest look at when creator management is worth it, when it isn't, and what to fix on your own account before considering representation.
Not every creator benefits from management. Agencies are worth it in specific circumstances and a waste of a revenue share in others. Here is how to tell which applies to you.
When an agency usually helps
You are leaving money in unanswered messages. If you cannot keep up with DMs, you are losing the largest revenue source on the platform. This is the clearest case for management, and it is the most common one.
You are producing well but not being found. Good content with no traffic strategy is the second most common gap. Marketing is a full job on its own.
Admin is eating your production time. If scheduling, pricing, analytics and messages leave no time to actually create, something has to be delegated.
You want to scale beyond what one person can run. There is a hard ceiling on a solo account, and it is set by hours in the day.
When it usually does not
Your account is very new. Some agencies will take on new creators, but many want existing traction. If you have no audience yet, you may simply be giving away a share of a small number while you build.
You already have coverage. If you have someone handling messages and traffic, an agency may be adding a layer rather than a capability.
You are not producing consistently. No agency can compensate for a lack of content. Management multiplies what exists; it does not substitute for it.
You are unwilling to give up any control. Management involves other people writing as you. If that is genuinely not acceptable, this arrangement will not work, and that is a legitimate position.
Fix these first
Before approaching anyone, it is worth having:
- A consistent posting rhythm you can actually sustain.
- Some sense of what your audience responds to.
- Clarity on what you will and will not produce.
Arriving with those makes you more attractive to good agencies and puts you in a stronger negotiating position.
The middle options
It is not binary. Some creators hire a single chatter directly rather than signing with a full agency. Others use a marketing service without giving up chat. These keep more of the revenue and more of the control, at the cost of managing those people yourself.
Worth considering if your gap is narrow — one function rather than everything.
If you do decide to look
The terms matter more than the pitch. Our guide to choosing an agency covers what to read closely, and the earnings breakdown covers how to evaluate a split honestly.
We match creators with established agencies and there is no cost to you. If the answer for you is “not yet”, that is a perfectly reasonable outcome.
